How to Read a Flow Meter Datasheet

The fields engineers and procurement teams should compare before approving an industrial flow meter quotation.

A datasheet is a technical contract in miniature. Read it from process conditions through installation, signals and documents so different supplier quotations can be compared on the same basis.

Start with the process conditions

Check fluid name, minimum, normal and maximum flow, density, viscosity, solids, pressure and temperature. A nominal pipe size alone is not enough to select a meter or predict pressure drop.

Separate accuracy from repeatability

Look for the reference behind the percentage: rate, full scale or a fixed error. Check the stated operating range, repeatability, zero stability and calibration conditions, especially for dosing and batching.

Review materials and connections

Confirm sensor or tube material, liner, electrodes, gaskets, seals, flange or Tri-Clamp standard and face-to-face length. Match every wetted component to the fluid and cleaning chemistry.

Confirm electrical and communication details

Check supply voltage, enclosure rating, cable entries, output type, HART or Modbus support, alarm behavior and the receiving PLC, DCS or SCADA requirements. Do not leave signal scaling to commissioning.

Check certification and supply scope

For hazardous areas, verify the complete Ex marking and certificate. Also request dimensional drawings, wiring diagrams, calibration reports, material certificates, warranty terms, lead time and export packing details.
