Both technologies can be reliable, but they solve different measurement problems. Start with the fluid and the required measurement basis before comparing price or pipe size.
Coriolis measures mass directly
A Coriolis meter measures mass flow and can also report density and temperature, depending on the transmitter. It suits liquids, slurries and some gases when direct mass measurement, batching or density information is important.
Electromagnetic meters need conductive liquid
An electromagnetic meter measures volumetric flow using the liquid's conductivity and does not work with insulating liquids such as many oils or hydrocarbons. It is often a strong choice for water, wastewater, slurries and corrosive conductive chemicals.
Compare accuracy and process priorities
Define whether the project needs mass accuracy, volume accuracy, density, low-flow performance, solids handling or custody-transfer documentation. The required measurement outcome is more important than selecting a familiar technology.
Review installation and materials
Confirm line size, pressure, temperature, liner and electrode or tube materials, connection standard and available straight-run space. Hazardous-area certification and DCS or PLC outputs must also match the site requirements.
Use a complete specification
Include fluid properties, minimum and maximum flow, normal flow, density or conductivity, process conditions, area classification, outputs and destination standards. This lets suppliers recommend a technically suitable model rather than a generic replacement.
