Mass Flow Meter Accuracy and Calibration

How to interpret accuracy claims and request the right calibration evidence for an industrial installation.

A percentage in a brochure is only useful when its reference, flow range and test conditions are clear. Use this checklist to compare meters on a consistent basis.

Check what the percentage refers to

Confirm whether the specification is a percentage of rate, full scale or a fixed zero error. Ask for the normal operating range and the repeatability value separately. A meter that is accurate at one point may not meet the required performance across the process range.

Size around the normal flow

Select a nominal size that keeps normal flow in the meter's recommended range while covering minimum and maximum conditions. Provide density, viscosity, pressure and temperature so the supplier can review pressure drop and turndown.

Review zero stability and installation

Pipe stress, vibration, entrained gas and an unstable shutoff condition can affect zero verification. Plan supports, isolation valves and a commissioning zero check according to the installation instructions.

Request traceable calibration documents

A calibration report should identify the instrument, test points, reference standard, uncertainty, date and acceptance result. For regulated or custody-transfer projects, confirm the required laboratory or national standard before purchase.

Keep accuracy in service

Record the initial zero and process conditions, inspect wiring and grounding, and trend readings during operation. Recalibration intervals depend on the application, process changes and quality system rather than one universal calendar period.
